This year‘s public action will join the global campaign Human Rights Defenders, which we titled “Courage needs Protection” (“Mut braucht Schutz”) in Germany. Amnesty International Stuttgart Student Group (Amnesty-Hochschulgruppe) co-ordinates and organises the action. Amnesty’s general secretary, Kumi Naidoo, is going to speak at the rally.
We want to raise awareness of the precarious and dangerous conditions, under which human rights defenders are fighting for human rights the world over.
At the core of the action, we have the shocking number 321. That’s how many human rights defenders were killed in 2018. The figure was published by the Front Line Defenders NGO, which focus their work on the support of human rights defenders in danger. Each of the victims will be represented by a yellow flower, which symbolically keeps on flourishing for us and everyone else.
321 yellow flowers will be handed out to Annual General Meeting (AGM) attendees at the Liederhalle exit after the regular programme sessions on Saturday evening. Flower in hand, we will walk towards Schillerplatz square (70173 Stuttgart) together. A gigantic, 4-meter wooden candle will be awaiting us there. We will put down our flowers around the candle and stand around candle and flowers, in a circle of protectors. This human wall shall symbolise the protection of human rights defenders in danger, that is, Amnesty International’s daily work. Remember: Courage needs Protection!
PS: For sure you may take the flowers home with you afterwards!
